ximtool seems to require an 8-bit pseudocolor display. Modern X11 sessions are never 8-bit pseudocolor (and you don't want them to be), so the best way we've found to handle this is to run it under a crippled vnc session.

dkg is writing up a script or two that should facilitate launching such ungainly programs in this kind of environment.
