running services

HTTP proxy

uranus is running ​squid, an HTTP proxy. It is accessible to the entire subnet, and can be used to reduce bandwidth consumption for things like regular apt-get updates.

we may want to switch to approx or apt-proxy instead for the specialized case of apt updates, however.

APT repository

uranus will host a specialized APT repository for CAL machines. it will allow updates directly, and will distribute software not otherwise available in the canonical debian or ubuntu archives.
