Which version(s?) of gcc do we want on the Configured Workstations? 3.3, 3.4, and 4.0 are all easily available on ubuntu.

2.95 is also available, but it would be terrible to include it unless it was really really necessary.

We can have multiple versions of gcc installed alongside eachother, but note that there are binary incompatibilities with libraries produced by different versions (in particular, for C++ libraries between 3.3 and 3.4).

installing the build-essential metapackage pulls in gcc 4.0 by default. does anyone else require other specific versions?
