Textbooks
Can anyone comment on some good/bad textbooks that students should/shouldn't buy on various astrophysical/mathematical/statistical/programming topics?
Numerical Recipes in [Language]
This is a classic if you need numerical subroutines. Note that there's an electronic edition, and you can find excerpts if you Google. Also, there are usually multiple copies floating around the department. ~Taka
Accretion Power in Astrophysics (Frank, King & Raine)
Active Galactic Nuclei (Krolik)
Black Holes, White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars (Shapiro & Teukolsky)
Review articles on arXiv: some are just as useful (and often more so) than a textbook.... and they're free! ~Taka
Mathematical Physics (Menzel)
Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium (Spitzer)
Fluid Mechanics (Kundu and Cohen)
The Physics of Fluids and Plasmas (Choudhuri)
