v21 v22 1 1 [[PageOutline]] 2 = Welcome to the CAL Network trac installation = 2 = CAL Linux Network = 3 Welcome to our new CAL Linux network. The new network will function 4 outside of the Sun Solaris network and will supplant some of the functions of the Sun network such as 5 email, printing, and web hosting. 3 6 4 This is a wiki for the purpose of documenting the work being done to create the new CAL network. 7 Our servers and workstations will be based on the Debian/Ubuntu Linux distribution. 8 Special consideration was taken in selecting these distributions, the most important aspects being 9 stability, ease of administration, and security. 5 10 6 == jumping-off points == 11 In general, the functionality of the new Linux network will be transparent to the existing 12 computing environment. However, the new Linux workstations should see noticeable gains in speed due to 13 faster CPUs, and the updated (Gigabit) network infrastructure; including a more robust software and hardware platform that 14 will allow a wide range of peripherals such as DVD/CD burners, scanners, external drives, etc. 7 15 8 * [https://docs.astro.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/tmpuser.pl Create a provisional account] for the CAL network.
