You Can't Win, You Can't Break Even, and You Can't Get Out of the Game

Abstract: The standard model and general relativity may come and go, but few physicists believe experiments will ever topple the laws of thermodynamics. Come find out why you've never seen a perpetual motion device, why scientists have yet to cool anything down to absolute zero and why even a magician cannot produce something from nothing. These are all thanks to the laws of thermodynamics --- the rules of the game --- and they apply to everything from grand theories of the cosmos to your sock drawer.
