Supernovae: Going Out with a Bang!

Just in time for July 4th, we gaze in awe at nature’s own spectacular fireworks display as we explore the vast and exotic worlds of some of the most explosive objects in the Universe: Supernovae! We begin with the conditions leading to their various spectacular deaths—flying through the lives of high-mass stars, as well as looking at the binary systems that also produce a different type of supernova. We also examine what is known about the magnificent explosions themselves, how we can tell which is which, and how they seed the Universe with new materials. Lastly, we sift through their ashes to find the most physically extreme objects in the Universe, which while few in (known) number, exhibit some of the strangest physical phenomena that have ever been observed!
