Galactic Archaeology: Excavating the Galaxy in the New Age of Surveys

Anyone who has been to a dark site away from the city lights and seen the Milky Way galaxy has been dazzled by its beauty and complexity. Our position inside the Milky Way galaxy gives us a unique view of how a galaxy works and perhaps can give us clues to larger questions about galaxy formation and the history of the universe. Several surveys in the past 15 years have given us tantalizing hints for the potential of this field. Additional surveys in the coming decades will provide further data to explore these questions. Come learn what excavating our galactic backyard can teach us about the universe.
