| | 7 | The whole world was captivated when New Horizons made its flyby of Pluto last July. Pluto’s heart showed us that even our own solar system can still surprise us. In this talk, I describe the instrument itself and how astronomers receive data from satellites in deep space. I’ll also show a variety of incredible new images that New Horizons has sent back thus far, explain why they’ll keep scientists busy for years to come, and place the findings in the larger context of the solar system and the New Horizons extended mission plan. Pluto might no longer be a planet but we’re finding that its a more complex world than we could have imagined. |
