Galactic Synthesizers

Galaxies come in all shapes and sizes -- disky, wobbly, ellipsoidal, and spiral to name a few. The appearance of a galaxy provides a wealth of information about the history and evolution of the system, but it also reveals the dominant types of motion of the billions of stars that make up the stellar component of the galaxy. First we'll learn about motion or "orbits" of stars in galaxies, then we'll take orbital information from a few sample galaxies and make music by mapping properties of the motion to properties of synthesized sound.
