Astro-ph Fall 2023
Current schedule is here
Motivation While it is important to look through abstracts on astro-ph (https://arxiv.org/list/astro-ph/new) every day, no one has time to actually read every paper. These meetings are an opportunity to learn about papers you may not have read from colleagues - to pool our collective expertise to understand the papers more deeply than we might individually be able to due to time (and brain-size) constraints!
In particular, these meetings are intended to provide an informal forum for the professional development of our junior members (undergrads, grads, and postdocs) to practice their presentation, interaction and listening skills. (Well, everyone needs to practice these all the time anyway.) Participants should endeavor to keep these pedagogical aims in mind in presentations and discussions.
Format Each week, 1-2 folks will present a paper for 10min, followed by ~4min for discussion and Q/A. Interruptions and questions are encouraged!
Practicalities Presenters are asked to: Choose a paper from astro-ph by the preceding Wednesday, so that titles can be announced. Prefer recent (~last month) papers with multiple votes in the departmental benty-fields or that may be of general interest to our community Present the paper. Provide lots of context for those outside of the field. Most people scroll through the PDF, commenting on figures as they go. Slides and whiteboard usage are optional but OK too.
Audience members don’t have to read the papers in advance, although they are encouraged to do so.
Everyone is asked to vote on papers in benty-fields: https://www.benty-fields.com/manage_jc?groupid=511
