Magnetic fields in high velocity clouds Alex Hill — CSIRO, Sydney

I will present a detection of magnetic fields in the Smith Cloud, a high velocity cloud interacting with the interstellar medium in the Galactic disk. High velocity clouds observed around the Milky Way trace the interaction between the Galactic disk and halo and may provide fuel for star formation in the disk. However, hydrodynamic work suggests that HVCs should not be able to survive passage through the Galactic halo as far as observed. The kinematic observations of H I and Halpha combined with Faraday rotation I present should test magnetohydrodynamic models of galactic inflow.
