Title: Cold Streams, Hot Winds

Abstract: Despite decades of effort, cosmological simulations fail to reproduce the observed properties of the luminous matter on galactic scales. The problem is linked to the physics of baryons inside and in the immediate vicinity of galaxies, whose dynamics are influenced by cold accretion and high-velocity outflows. I present the results of high-resolution cosmological simulations that model these critical processes with an unprecedented resolution, focusing on two systems: an interacting pair of galaxies at z~3 and a Milky Way-like galaxy at z~0. Comparison with recent kinematic observations gives us important clues to the nature of these systems.
