Where Does Data Come from? Groundbreaking Results from Ground-based Telescopes

Not only do ground-based telescopes provide fantastic science and cool images, but you can visit them too! This talk will review our cutting-edge facilities, from the VLA (radio), to Gemini North & South, two of the largest optical telescopes in the world. I'll focus on recent results coming out of these telescopes -- a new image of perhaps the first planet around a sun-like star, ongoing work to measure orbits of stars around the black hole at the center of our galaxy, and new observations of galactic cannibalism that can fuel the growth of galaxies.
