v4 v5 1 1 Astronomy Colloquium / Fall 2007 2 2 3 James Jee 3 Hsiao-Wen Chen 4 (Chicago) 4 5 5 UC Davis6 Halo Occupation of Dark Baryons 6 7 7 Dark Matter Substructures in Galaxy Clusters Revealed by Gravitational Lensing with HST/ACS 8 Observations of QSO absorption-line systems have revealed a wealth of information for the intergalactic medium from the nearby universe all the way to the epoch of reionization. These absorbers 9 offer a powerful tool for mapping the dark universe, but their correlation with known stellar populations has always been ambiguous. I will describe on-going surveys of absorbers and galaxies along common lines of sight toward background quasars, for quantifying the cross-correlation between stars and gas. I will also introduce a new technique we have developed for constraining the baryon content of known dark matter halos based on absorption-line statistics. 8 10 9 Gravitational lensing analyses of galaxy clusters with HST/ACS bring us many interesting discoveries. Among these are dark matter substructures found in some merging galaxy clusters. Thanks to the unprecedented sensitivity and resolution of HST/ACS, these substructures are well resolved and possess high significance. I will present our gravitational lensing analyses of three interesting galaxy clusters showing distinct substructures, which can tell us about the dynamical history, the properties of the cluster components, and perhaps fundamental physics.
