Outreach
v17 v18 21 21 We also get miscellaneous requests from school groups of all ages who want to see the stars and planets from our observatory, or have an indoor lesson/activity session. BR 22 22 23 Public Observing BR23 Public Observing/Star-Gazing Nights BR 24 24 25 We try to do one observing night a month on the roof. Based on our resources and the size of our audience, it is ideally run by three volunteers. Traditionally it has been Friday nights; however, transient events like eclipses, transits, and comets demand alternative scheduling. Due to the abysmal probability of getting a clear night (~15% ?) we often reschedule for the following week if the original night is clouded out. 26 BR 25 We try to do a star-gazing session every two weeks on the roof. Each star-gazing night is coupled with an astronomy talk and a slideshow. The talk/slideshow is especially worthwhile when the sky is cloudy, which is usually the case (only 1 in 4 nights are clear from NYC). Traditionally it has been Friday nights; however, transient events like eclipses, transits, and comets demand alternative scheduling. BR 27 26 28 27 Public Astronomy Lectures BR 29 28 30 People in our department are welcome to give lectures aimed at the general public. Ideally these coincide with star-gazing nights .BR29 People in our department are welcome to give lectures aimed at the general public.
