From Earth to the Universe Photography Exhibition

Columbia University will be hosting the "From Earth to the Universe" astrophotography exhibition from Monday, October 5 through Monday, October 12 in front of Butler Library. This project consists of 25 3x3 foot double-sided panels with spectacular views of our Universe coupled with scientific descriptions. Although the displays will remain up 24/7 during this period, we will have a table setup in front of the exhibit just South of the Sundial from 9AM to 7PM. This table will have lots of free astronomy materials (posters, postcards, images, books, etc.), a Galileoscope and a small solar telescope, as well as advertisements for our other astronomy outreach events to give away to attendees. We need volunteers to staff this table. Please edit the wiki and sign yourself up for one or more slots below.

For more information about the exhibit, please see the outreach website.

As a volunteer, you will be responsible for

  • giving away educational materials
  • answering questions about science and astronomy
  • handing out evaluations to willing attendees
  • using the tally-counter to count the number of people who visit the exhibit
  • showing people views through the Galileoscope and the solar telescope
  • positively representing astronomy to the public (being happy, helpful, etc.)

If you are the first shift in the morning or the last shift in the evening, you are responsible for setting up or taking down the table and materials at the exhibit site (we cannot leave the table there overnight). The table and the materials will be stored in the evenings in the Astronomy Library, Pupin 1402, next to the lab computers. If there is bad weather or rain during your scheduled staffing period, the displays will remain up (they are weatherproof), but we don't want you to get wet, so you can cover the table and educational materials with a plastic tarp that we'll provide, and you can go inside of Butler or Lerner until the weather subsides.

If you have *any* problems with the exhibit (theft, vandalism, wind blowing the displays down, etc), please contact Cameron at: 646.678.0182. I will be in contact with public safety and facilities.
