Public Relations and Swag Officer

Responsibilities

• Contacting E/PO officers at various NASA telescopes (e.g. HST, Chandra, SOHO, GALEX, etc.) requesting swag.
• Receive and organize the swag in the swag area of the Pupin astronomy library (southern end).
• Advertising our schedule of events to various free media outlets at the beginning of each semester.
• Approximate time commitment is 6 hours / semester.

Directions for Obtaining Swag

Our swag stockpile waxes and wanes according to the frequency of our events. Here are some of the Education and Public Outreach contacts that have been used in the past (and a few new ones). Contact them and explain our program and request as much material as you want or can get. When they ask for a shipping address, use this one (it will go to Ayoune):

Hubble Space Telescope

The main HST EPO site is like a labyrinth, but the second link shows the lithographs available. I recommend contacting Holly or Cheryl and seeing what materials they have available. Note: the Black Hole posters are useless--do *not* get them. I think the lithographs are the best thing they have.

Directions for Public Relations

Once the outreach director has produced a lecture schedule including titles and dates for all of the outreach events for the semester, it is your job to submit this schedule to various outlets. This will typically occur about 2-3 weeks prior to the semester beginning. The schedule will generally be found on the outreach wiki or on the Talks page. Short description: List the name of the speaker and the title of their talk first. Public access to rooftop telescopes and stargazing after lecture, weather permitting. Lecture occurs regardless.

Full Description/Summary: Every other Friday, the Astronomy Department at Columbia University sponsors public outreach. Attendees get access to astronomical information through timely lectures by members of our department aimed at a public audience. After the thirty-minute lecture, if the weather is clear, the public can proceed to the roof of Pupin Hall and be guided by volunteers in stargazing and observing through the telescopes of Rutherfurd Observatory. A slide show and discussion with an astronomer about various astronomical images happens if the weather is cloudy.

Lecturer and title:

List the title (professor, postdoctoral researcher, PhD candidate, BA candidate, etc.) and name of the lecturer along with the title of their talk.
