LOGGING IN / LOGGING OUT
Logging In
All of CAL systems are running the Gnome GDM - Graphical Display Manager.
To log in, make sure the cursor is at the first prompt ( Login: ) and type your login user name. Then type your password at the second prompt ( Password: ) . If you think you mis-typed your password, click on the Reset button. If you entered the correct information, you will be logged in and the window manager will appear. At this point, you are ready to begin any task you set out to perform on the workstation.
Troubleshooting common login problems
If you're having trouble logging in to a CAL workstation you should try the following methods in order to restore your ability to log in.
- If you're receiving a message that indicates that your login is incorrect, go to the password change page and reset your password (you can reset your password to the same as it was before if you'd prefer). As a last resort, have the email the system admin. for a password reset.
- If your username and password appear to work, but upon logging in you are sent to a black screen and then immediately back to the login screen, you may be at your maximum level of allowed file space. In order to resolve this problem you should try logging in to failsafe mode. In order to activate failsafe mode, use the pull down field in the "Window Manager Selector" under the login and password fields. In failsafe mode, run the command "df -h" in order to check you filespace usage. If you are very near maximum quota usage, archive and remove files to increase freespace on your account then try logging in again.
- If your username and password appear to work, but upon logging in you are sent to a black screen and then immediately back to the login screen and you are not at your maximum allowed filespace, your account's configuration files may be invalid. This is likely to occur if you make a mistake while customizing your account. In order to repair your account's configuration files you should login to failsafe mode using the "Gnome Display Manager" pulldown field and run "XXXXXX" at the command prompt. This command will rename all of your current configuration files and load the CAL default configuration files. If you continue to have problems please file a ticket.
Logging Out
- To log out, select the System menu >> Log Out. A menu should appear whose last item is Quit .
