Graduate Student Representative (BFF)

This is a reference page for Graduate student information.

THIS PAGE IS NOT OFFICIAL DEPARTMENTAL POLICY. IT MERELY REPRESENTS THE PEER-ADVICE PROVIDED BY FELLOW STUDENTS AND FACULTY.

What the handbook says

Additional information

We agreed that the representative should have several responsibilities:

  • Act as an advocate for grad students and grad student issues in the department.
  • Meet regularly with the DGS and be the grad representative to whom the DGS can communicate on broad issues
  • Follow up on grad student initiatives
  • Be knowledgeable about department and university resources
  • Be available at a standing monthly meeting during which any grad student can raise issues
  • Respect the privacy of students who come to the rep in his/her official capacity

The only requirement we will place on the rep is that he/she be a different person from the student who sits in on faculty meetings. We will hold elections once a year.

Lia says: Christine's description of the BFF's role is above. Add to handbook.

Josh says:I think it might be a good idea for the BFF to be nominally in charge of organizing, arranging, and promoting the monthly grad student meetings: not just being available for them.
