Dissertation proposal
This is a reference page for Graduate student information.
THIS PAGE IS NOT OFFICIAL DEPARTMENTAL POLICY. IT MERELY REPRESENTS THE PEER-ADVICE PROVIDED BY FELLOW STUDENTS AND FACULTY.
What the handbook says
By November 15 of the third year, students are expected to present a written (~ 5-10 page) dissertation proposal and to defend it before a committee of three faculty members appointed (in consultation with the student) by the Director of Graduate Studies. Subsequently, the student will meet at least once per year (usually in May) with this committee to present a progress report and discuss their research, along with any problems encountered. At all other times, the student should feel free to ask for a meeting of the Committee, or to consult with the Director of Graduate Studies or the Department Chair if problems are being encountered.
Additional information
This is an area where the handbook is out of date. It was recently established (Fall 2007, I think) that 3+ year students will have Committee meetings twice a year, at the end of Fall and Spring semesters.
