CAL User Guide
Welcome to our new CAL Linux network. The new network will function outside of the Sun Solaris network and will suplant some of the functions of the Sun network such as email, printing, centralized user authentication.
As we are all probably aware, there is a wide selection of Linux distributions, our servers will be based on the Debian distribution and our workstations will be based on the Ubuntu release (also Debian based). Special consideration was taken in selecting these distributions, the two most important aspects being stability and security.
In general, the computing environment will remain relatively the same in terms of experience and comfort level for most users as the Linux environment translates quite well from the Sun Solaris Unix model. However we should see noticeable gains in speed due to an updated network infrastructure that is based on a Gigabit network infrastructure and since most of the new (modern) systems are equipped with gigabit Ethernet cards and an increase in peripheral availability such as DVD/CD burners, scanners, etc., as well as a more robust platform in terms of software availability.
