6 Our servers will be based on the Debian distribution and our workstations will be based on the Ubuntu release

1011In general, the functionality of the new Linux network will be transparent to the existing
11 computing environment. However, the new linux stations should see noticeable gains in speed due to the CPU and the
12 updated network infrastructure that is based on a Gigabit network infrastructure since most
13 of the new (modern)  systems are equipped with gigabit Ethernet cards; as well as an increase
14 peripheral availability such as DVD/CD burners, scanners, etc., as well as a more robust
15 platform in terms of software availability.

16In terms of software, We have taken the time to test the requested Astronomical software
17packages as well as some of the standard graphical and writing/productivity applications.
18The majority of the software from the Sun systems will be available on the linux network.
