| | 3 | Welcome to our new CAL Linux network. The new network will function outside of the Sun Solaris network |
| | 4 | and will suplant some of the functions of the Sun network such as email, printing, centralized user authentication. |
| | 5 | |
| | 6 | As we are all probably aware, there is a wide selection of Linux distributions, our servers |
| | 7 | will be based on the Debian distribution and our workstations will be based on the Ubuntu |
| | 8 | release (also Debian based). Special consideration was taken in selecting these distributions, |
| | 9 | the two most important aspects being stability and security. |
| | 10 | In general, the computing environment will remain relatively the same in terms of |
| | 11 | experience and comfort level for most users as the Linux environment translates quite well |
| | 12 | from the Sun Solaris Unix model. However we should see noticeable gains in speed due to an |
| | 13 | updated network infrastructure that is based on a Gigabit network infrastructure and since most |
| | 14 | of the new (modern) systems are equipped with gigabit Ethernet cards and an increase in |
| | 15 | peripheral availability such as DVD/CD burners, scanners, etc., as well as a more robust |
| | 16 | platform in terms of software availability. |
