Backing up Data

Users home disks are backed up by the system.

Data disks are not backed up by the system. These are your responsibility to backup.

It is exceedingly easy to make a mistake with tar that can overwrite a valuable tape. Experienced users tend to balance the risk of losing data with the time taken to back up the data. About once a week seems to be the norm.

Software coding is probably better done on your home disk area where backups are more frequent and guaranteed.
