Backing up Data

Users (Sun) home disks are currently backed up by the system. We are currently reviewing options for the Linux system, however, the following will apply to both networks:

Data disks are not backed up by the system. These are your responsibility to backup.

It is quite easy to make a mistake with tar that can overwrite a valuable tape/drive. Experienced users tend to balance the risk of losing data with the time taken to back up the data. About once a week seems to be the norm.

Software coding is probably better done on your home disk area where backups are more frequent and guaranteed.
